In this installment of our series on crafting bespoke versions of ChatGPT with the GPT Builder, we delve into the fascinating realm of weather reporting and forecasting, specifically tailored for Aviation. Here we will share our experiences and insights from developing METAR GPT, a specialized tool designed to revolutionize the way aviators receive and interpret meteorological information.

There are of course already apps and websites that provide METAR and TAF information (Figure 1), but this example uses all the tools available in GPT Builder, and helps illustrate what GPTs are and aren’t suitable for.

What is a METAR?

METAR is an acronym for “Meteorological Aerodrome Report”. It’s a standardized format used for reporting weather information, particularly relevant for aviation purposes. METAR reports are primarily intended to provide pilots and flight planning personnel with an accurate, concise snapshot of the weather conditions at an airport at a specific time. A METAR is a statement of actual weather conditions at an airport.
